Case Study 1
Norcomm UK successfully completed a roll out project of 21 schools within the Manchester area. This was for the supply, installation and maintenance of a cabled and wireless network infrastructure. We were selected, for our knowledge, experience and flexibility.

The project was funded and headed by the EAZ, whom were responsible for the schools in the particular area. The aim was to improve the ICT structures within the schools utilising the latest technology.

Norcomm UK was given the task of coordinating surveys and suitable installation dates and times for all 21 schools. Our project team handled this side along with all the required specifications and costs.

Norcomm UK field-tested no fewer than eight different manufacturer’s wireless equipment. We also examined the feasibility of FHSS vs. DSSS, however due to cost restraints and bandwidth requirements the DSSS technology was chosen. Various performance aspects were scrutinised during the tests, including performance through different building fabrics, room density, distances achievable, security features and maximum number of users per access point. With all the above information and test results, D-Link was the selected product range. We also utilised their range of data switches to accommodate the additional cabling infrastructure.

Within the installation boundaries, Norcomm UK also undertook a limited amount of electrical installation work, providing power to the access points within the schools.

Throughout the whole project Norcomm UK supplied, installed and still maintains:

150No 11Mbps 802.11b Wireless Access Points
850No 11Mbps 802.11b Wireless PCMCIA cards
150No 11Mbps 802.11b Wireless Compact Flash cards
65No 24port 10/100Mbps switches

The total project value was in excess of £350k, encompassing, data cabling, electrical cabling, wireless equipment installation and maintenance.

Norcomm UK Ltd has continued to provide a second to none service to both the EAZ and the 21 schools, including upgrade and enhancement proposals.
